Ali Hasanov

b. 1976, Baku, Azerbaijan

Lives and works in Baku and in Moscow

A graduate of the Azimzadeh State Art College (1993) and Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Art (1997) in Baku, received a degree in filmmaking from Rustam Ibragimbekov’s Baku International Film School (2010) and reveived also Moscow school of New Cinema (2013). Ali Hasanov was known as the brash nonconformist even back in his student years, and has since become known as a man who thinks outside the box. Hasanov is also interested in poetry, rock music and film direction. He became the first performance artist to practice in Azerbaijan and he is a member of the creative association Wings of Time (2000). His work can often be seen at the Museum Centre of Azerbaijan and has been exhibited both in Azerbaijan (Baku and Ganja), and abroad in Russia, Georgia, France, Norway, Greece and Italy.

Hasanov pioneered performance art in Azerbaijan and represented his country at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007). He is also the founder and leader of a musical collective called PG Large Used Project. Hasanov remains active in various genres such as visual and performance art, video and sound installations, as well as painting and drawing. His performance art showed a creature crawling into a black robe. It was a tragic image of a ‘Spider Man’, gaspingin a narrow space, and saving himself by embracing his own identity, by finding a way out of an amorphous dark structure. This piece symbolizes the path of Azerbaijan in its struggle for independence.

Similar motifs resonate through the performance work illustrated here, Scatterheart. Here also, the language of body movement and music merges into a laconic installation, illustrating the path to freedom. But this time it is the path of a creative soul, which, escapes the confines of a certain core, of a ‘shelter’ (by destroying it), and searches for its place in the surrounding world to find its own niche and to fit into it.
